As we step into a new decade
As we step into a new decade, I reflect back on the years gone by and I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude for all the learning and experiences this time has brought me. There are a few life lessons I would like to share and take forward into the new year.
Time is precious. We only have so little of it and this realization becomes more apparent as you cross certain stages of life. Every time I go to a new place or experience something very beautiful, my heart wells up and I try and hold on to that feeling for as long as I can because I know that I may never have the opportunity to see or feel it again. It doesn’t make me unhappy or sad to know there is only so much time with each one of us, it make me more determined to make each moment count whether it is the simple act of sitting and enjoying the winter sun on my face or striving for a bigger goal.
Life is unpredictable. One day all’s well with your world and the next you are faced with an insurmountable challenge. Ask someone fighting for their life in a hospital bed what freedom means, ask someone who has lost a loved one what they would not do for just another moment. I am learning to live each moment as my last, to be absolutely present in the now, to hear, feel, touch, see and taste life with mindfulness because life is really unpredictable and challenges and grief and pain are what make you more humane and strong.
Perfection isn’t a thing. We all strive to control the environment, outcomes and people around us but do we ever think about what we lose in the process. I especially see people struggle with relationships and how they feel they should be perceived and treated. You can influence people and circumstances but you cannot force things to go your way. If you do, you will live with constant fear, anger and stress. Perfection often holds you back from being your most productive and happy self.
Happiness matters. The little things in life really do matter. The early morning cup of tea you share with your partner, deep conversation with your parent, playing with your dog, giggling with friends, a warm hug from your child, reaching out to someone in need, travelling, reading and art and music, being in nature, a warm meal at the end of a long day, watching your favourite tv show, spring in the air, birds in the sky, flowers in bloom, a silent prayer, a magical sunset, walking barefoot on the beach, being filled with a deep sense of appreciation for life, your meditation practice, the miracle of each breath…
