Does the media perpetuate unhelpful stereotypes of women? Does this create body image anxiety among women?

As we actively consume various forms of media on a daily basis, it’s only natural that a lot of our social perceptions are shaped by it. So there always comes an added responsibility for all forms of media – film, TV and advertisements alike – to be more careful about the message we convey. Though, I feel that as long as it’s done right, simply portraying a particular image of women – whether stereotypical or not – need not necessarily be damaging to the woman who doesn’t fit that image. By doing it right, I mean while communicating we must make sure about two points: are we saying that this is the only way a woman should look or act? Or could we have told the same story without using that particular image of a woman? If the answer is yes, then we are doing something wrong and we should rethink our approach.

Having said that I also think that as most forms of media draws inspiration from real life, and with the increasing number of women breaking the stereotype in real life, we will soon begin to see the same in popular media as well.
Finally, I would like to say that I strongly believe that every woman is wonderful, and regardless of what image media portray, every woman should feel confident and amazing about who they are.
