Aspiring women filmmakers showcase their work

22 young independent aspiring women filmmakers below the age of 30 across Nepal showcased their short movies and documentaries as a final assignment of a movie making workshop at an event organised on July 29 at the Nepal Tourism Board. The workshop was organised by Onion Films Nepal in May with the support of U.S. Department of State.

In the weeklong workshop, participants learned the various aspects of moviemaking and visual communication including script writing, cinematography, acting, editing, and direction with sessions conducted by well known personalities of the Nepali film industry including Manoj Pandit, Abinash Bikram Shah, Reecha Sharma, Gopal Shivakoti, and Subarna Thapa. American filmmaker Shalini Katyayana had taken a session on how to make impactful movies and documentaries.

The presented short movies and documentaries tackled various issues related to women in Nepal including child marriage, female feticide, prostitution, female political activism, and forceful disappearance of people during the civil war, the stigma of menstruation, etc.

Actor and director Deepa Shree Niraula was chief guest at the screening ceremony. Manoj Pandit, Subarna Thapa and Namrata Sapkota were also present as special guests at the event. Onion Films Nepal has been conducting moviemaking workshops for young people since 2012. It has already trained over 220 young people in movie making and visual communication. Her Story is the only programme in Nepal catering to aspiring young female filmmakers.
