With the same qualifications, experience and effort at work, it is definitely unfair that women get paid less than men. Especially at a time when women all over the world are breaking the proverbial glass ceiling in various fields, and closer home, we have a head of state who is a woman, it hardly needs to be told that women work as effectively as men.
There is an urgent need for companies to review their policies, ending discrimination against women on the basis of time they take off work to be the primary caregivers of their families and recognise that women employees should be regarded justly and paid equal to their male counterparts. Women should also realise their self- worth and be able to negotiate a fair deal with their employers and ask for what they are truly worth, rather than being undermined most of the times. If such an environment can be created immediately, then only can we hope to see the gender pay gap being bridged in our generation.
