Santosh Kumar Shrestha

Santosh Kumar Shrestha, 35, lives in Australia and is not just a fitness enthusiast but a body building competitor who has several achievements and awards to his name. He comes from Saljhandi, Butwal and moved to Australia.

He runs a restaurant called Yak & Yeti in Neutral Bay, Sydney. Santosh is hugely passionate about fitness and is also training and motivating others to achieve their goals.

How and when did you get interested in body building?

I started body building in 2010. Growing up I was always active and got involved in as many sports as I possibly could. Unfortunately, my muscle tone was least impressive and I remained the short, skinny kid all the way up till high school. Then I finally decided it was time for me to hit the gym and change how I look. I quickly became a regular at the gym despite a busy work routine, and before I knew it, I began to see results. I received compliments from gym mates, friends and family at my transformation. My interest in fitness and nutrition skyrocketed. I was advised to compete. So I did my first competition back in 2014, and here I am today dreaming and achieving my goals.

How important is fitness to you?

Fitness is everything for me. I can’t imagine my life without being in the gym. Fitness is my passion and love. Through fitness I enjoy challenging myself, either through training or diet and I always strive to improve myself. So I have developed the mindset to give my 100% to what I do.

What are some of the key things that worked for you towards getting the body you desired?

Specific diet plan and exercise regime are very important, but for me the key was to find my motivation to achieve my goal. Enjoy the time you spend at the gym while working out and a simple little habit called CONSISTENCY.

How important is discipline? Do you ever slip up? And how do you get back into routine?

Discipline allows you to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So it is very important for me. I will say I have a cheat meal day every now and then. Sometimes the temptation is too powerful to ignore. I am not alone I guess, but i have learnt that the more often you resist temptation – whether it’s the urge to eat an unhealthy snack or skip your evening run – the stronger your willpower can become. I always stick to my routine. Like I said it’s all about developing the right mindset.

How often and how many hours do you put into exercise?

A typical day for me is: I wake up about 6am and go to the gym. I train for an hour, then off to work, then back to the gym again. So overall two hours per day.

Is it possible for anyone to get the body they desire?

Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it. Anything is possible! A great example is my trainee Pra Shrestha. She worked hard and put her heart and soul into it for a good four months. Look at her now. She is competing at an international level representing our country. She is a great example. There is no such thing as Can’t.

What could be the key points that someone starting out should look out for?

Two things I would recommend for any beginner:
1. Start slow, prepare your mind first
2. Train two days per week: Just go to the gym, walk in, and leave if you want. The important thing is that you establish the habit of going.

Is body building addictive? Can someone go overboard?

Yes it can be. I am addicted to it but you got to love what you do to maintain balance.

What is the most important aspect of fitness and wellbeing for you?

My main aspect of fitness and wellbeing is to become the No. 1 body builder and to win as many trophies as I can. I want to use this platform to help others to get fit as well. Teach them about wellbeing. Provide them fitness education, because being fit and having a healthy lifestyle will change your life. Also to motivate people to get into shape and be healthy, and to be positive and happy.

What helped you in your journey to success?

Just love your life. Be positive, take risks and just go out and do what you love to do. Happiness will help you in your journey and also contribute to any success.

Some aspects that make exercise fun….
