International Feminist Solidarity celebrated

On September 18, Civil Society Organisations of Nepal and Sangat – a feminist network celebrated International Feminist Solidarity in Kathmandu. The event honoured women activists working for gender equality, justice and peace in Nepal and South Asia in the presence of more than 700 participants from 35 civil society network organisations and eight different nationalities.

Shabnam Virmani, a renowned Indian scholar and performer of Kabir poetry, challenged hatred with the power of love through a musical performance. Thirty-six women activists from seven countries of South Asia and Sierra Leone who were participants of Sangat’s 23rd South Asian Feminist Capacity Building Course shared speeches of their experience. Word Warriors, CWIN and Nepal Mahila Ekta Samaj showcased cultural performances. The event concluded with the South Asia launch of One Billion Rising (OBR) 2019 through a talk by feminist activist and OBR South Asia Coordinator Kamla Bhasin. Entering its 7th year, OBR is calling for a global resistance to forces of injustice. In its continued fight against violence against women and girls, this year’s campaign questions and opposes all manifestations of inequality endemic to our economic, political, socio-cultural, environmental and ideological systems.
