Aromatherapy: A Way of Life

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being. The inhaled aroma from these essential oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole body healing. It is used for a variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement and increased cognitive function. There are a wide number of essential oils available, each with its own healing properties. A respected name in the field of holistic beauty, Dr Blossom Kochhar , is the Chairperson of Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies and a name of synonymous with successful brands like Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic and Blossom Kochhar College of Creative Arts & Design (BKCCAD). Dr Kochhar has practiced and preached achieving beauty through aromatherapy for over 35 years and has a double doctorate for her contribution in the field of aromatherapy – one from Indian Board of Alternative Medicines, India and second from New Age International University, Italy. Recently she has published her new book Aromatherapy: A Way of Life. WOW caught up with her about her book and aspects of aromatherapy and beauty.

Excerpts:

What is your book “Aromatherapy: A Way of Life” is all about?
It’s my fourth book and it’s all about how do you live your life with Aromatherapy, It’s the recipe of life… I want to share my knowledge with my readers on how natural oils can help them in various ways and the positive benefits of natural oils in a person’s life.

What inspires you to write?
We were always giving recipes and always telling people what to do and how to do so. I just decided to share my knowledge and thought let’s put it in a book so everyone will have access to it.

Tell us something about the use of natural oils and why is it important to the human body and mind?
Definitely natural things are always connected with our body and mind because there are so many chemicals around us and it directly affects our body and mind whereas use of natural oils and aromatherapy will help you relax your mind and body. Because your skin is born natural, the use of natural oils is important.

How can aromatherapy help become stress free?
Aromatherapy is not only an excellent skin food but it is also a great way to achieve well balanced mental health. Use it ever so often in your bath, a few drops mixed in water as a last rinse or spritz it on your towel. Several aromatherapy oils have different effects. If you’re stressed, lavender oil is a great way to achieve relaxation and a calm mind. Ylang Ylang oil is great to wake you up and kickstart energy. You can even apply a few drops after you moisturise over your lotion. Incorporating aroma therapy in your regular day to day life can have a healing effect on your body and on your skin.

What is your definition of beauty?
Beauty is the air of confidence. It is the air of warmth, affection and beautiful thoughts. Beauty is not just the makeup!

I love myself and I love everything that’s the best of being me, I guess!

Your top beauty tips…
• Don’t just wash your face with face wash. In the evening, clean with cleansing cream on a daily basis.
• Use toner (non alcoholic) because Nepal has hard water and use of chlorine, potassium in water harms your skin.
• Apply sun screen every day. Choosing the right sun screen for your skin tone is also important.
• Think positive.
• Love yourself!
