Life often happens in a flash
Life often happens in a flash… we have moment to moment to make the most of who we are, to live life in its entirety, and to find and give meaning to our existence. Yet we live like we will live forever. Living in the past or in the future takes away from truly being alive. And thus the only important moment is the present moment. To live in the present moment requires us to consciously choose and live with this awareness. To be able to do this, I have found a few simple things that help in the process:
Live simply. With the fast pace of life and the forces of consumerism, we often do and buy things we don’t need; we are constantly in a race to acquire, possess and expend with little or no thought. When you start to remove unneeded possessions or when you choose how to spend your time, it becomes a freeing process. Living minimally allows you to live without encumbrances. I have started on this journey but strangely it is not as easy a process as it sounds. For example, there are so many memories attached to things you own… books from your childhood, a worn out tee shirt that you wore when you won that match, a cupboard full of shoes that you’ll never wear… and the list goes on.
Gratitude. If there is one thing that will change how you feel, it is the attitude of gratitude. It is the most empowering feeling when you wake up and start your day with a prayer of thanks for all that you have. I try and soak in as much of life as possible in a day… I try and feel fully the sights, the sounds, the smells, the emotions, the joys and the sorrows that come with a day. I appreciate the blue sky, I am thankful for my dogs unwavering joy on seeing me, the warmth of my mom’s hug, the suspended time when I am immersed in a book, a quiet moment of meditation…
Letting go. Forgiving past hurts is also never easy. You may think you have moved past a person or a circumstance, but sometimes they resurface and your power is then in the ability of letting go.
Love what you do. If you are just surviving the work week to get to Saturday, you are wasting a huge portion of your life. We all do not have our dream job, dream colleagues or dream opportunity to shine, but that shouldn’t stop us from enjoying what we have in the now and progressing towards what we really want. You should never allow dreaming about tomorrow to replace living in today.
Either you are part of the solution or part of the problem. Spending your mental energy on worrying, scheming or envy will only drain you. You are what you choose to see in the world. Your thoughts and your actions make who you are. What you send out into the world is what you will receive in return. Make sure it is good and kind and loving.
I try never to forget that if I can live only one moment at a time, I might as well make it the present moment. I hope you can too.
