Miscarriage, precautions to start a family again
Q. I am 33 years old and I had a miscarriage a year back. How long should I wait before starting a family again and what precautions can we take to ensure that the incident does not repeat? – Name withheld
A. Usually, we recommend that you avoid pregnancy for at least three months after miscarriage. As you had a miscarriage one year back, you can try for the next pregnancy if you feel mentally and physically fit for it. Chances of miscarriage in a first pregnancy is 10-16%. After having one miscarriage it rises to 14-21%. I will highly recommend you to have a preconception counseling with a gynecologist, who will take your through history and do physical examination . If there is any problem, that will be sorted out before pregnancy starts. You should also start taking vitamin supplement, specially Folic Acid.
