Would you adopt a child?

Irrespective of whether you have your own or are not able of having one for any reason.

People adopt children for three reasons: if a spouse is infertile, if they lose a young child, or if they want to rescue orphans or kids of destitute families. Adoption has never been an impulsion. This is deliberate, planned and most of the times a sustained decision. However, there are instances that some individuals have adopted an orphan or street child out of pity.

But, ours is a society that wants to stick to the traditional value of ‘family blood’. This very principle has inspired many parents to force their sons into second marriage just because the daughter-in-law is sterile. We can barely find examples where a family has adopted a child instead of taking the burden of a second marriage. Even if a couple has adopted a child as a result of sudden impulsion, they tend to keep the child in a hostel of a reputed educational institution and pay the expenses. Most people don’t keep the child with themselves. Similarly, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or test tube baby is the first alternative if a couple is unable to give birth to a baby. Again, adoption is not an alternative.

In my case, I have not yet made up my mind about adopting a child since we haven’t planned to have a baby yet. My family members and in-laws are waiting to see our own child in the near future, and I may not be able to afford to adopt a child right now. However, after some years, our second child can be an adopted one. Even then, I don’t want to adopt a grown-up child, I would rather opt for a kid below four years of age. I am fond of kids and adopting a child is probably the most beautiful service to humanity.
