REPRESENTATIONAL ART

What he sees and experiences is what is reflected in his work. Sanjeev Maharjan is all about representational art. And when he’s not painting, this 31-year-old artist spends time spreading love for art. Maharjan, together with a fellow artist, runs a learning space called Drawing Room Kathmandu that conducts drawing and painting classes and also organises art camps for children. The student of Master’s in Fine Arts at Tribhuvan University is also involved in non-profit organisation called Srijanalaya which is related to art and education for children.

Art is…
Art, for me, is a medium and a process through which I can understand myself better.

Which is your prefered medium?
There is no specific medium that I like working with the most. I like to explore different visual art mediums.

Your inspiration…
My social surroundings. I want people to notice things which they usually pass by without care.

Rather than work, there was a moment… when I was selected for a student’s exchange programme called NEDNEP between Kathmandu University Centre for Art and Design and Gerrit Rietveld Acadamie, Amsterdam in 2008. That project helped me a lot to grow as an artist and to believe in the process.

Favourite Nepali artist
Birendra Pratap Singh, Manuj Babu Mishra and Sashi Bikram Shah to name a few. I get inspired by all of their works which I find very powerful. They give me the energy and enthusiasm to create something better. I also admire them for devoting their lives to their passion.

One International Art Festival you would like to be part of…
Venice Art Biennale. It is one of the oldest and prestigious art biennale festivals in the world. And I would love to visit Venice as well.

If you weren’t an artist, you would be…
A musician, I guess.
