do culture & social beliefs trigger domestic violence

I think culture and social beliefs play a huge role in domestic violence. Domestic violence often takes place when one partner wants to dominate or control another, and our culture often reaffirms in men that they are superior. For example, the practice of Chaupadi considers women to be impure during menstruation. In these patriarchal norms and rituals women are placed second and men are given the higher position. Also, in terms of our culture, many see domestic violence to be normal as it becomes a part of their family situations while growing up. Unfortunately, we are doing very little to tackle these issues, and I think by raising awareness we are taking the first step to uproot it from our society.
