Sumita Gurung aka Sumi has always been passionate about art and fashion. Her designs are reflective of her aim to create clothes that accentuate a woman’s individuality and beauty. Her muse is the confident woman who is beautiful inside and out.
Her brand, Sumi G is focused on the belief that fashion is wearable. The brand’s aesthetic is edgy yet elegant and timeless, and the range includes high street fashion, resort wear, evening wear and ethnic fashion, all customised to the woman who wears it.
What is fashion for you?
Fashion for me is an expression of who I am. It does not necessarily have to mean glamour, or the urge to follow the current trends, it is more a way of life, a reflection of inner beauty and personality. Likewise, my Fashion aesthetic is edgy, whimsical yet classy and is a representation of me. I don’t like to take fashion too seriously and follow the trends, I like to experiment and have fun while dressing up.
What does your brand Sumi G offer to fashion lovers?
My brand offers versatility, comfort and style which I feel is a perfect amalgamation. I encourage my clients to talk about their ideas to customise the look to suit their personality and create something that is unique to them.
Your fashion inspiration…
My fashion icon is Coco Chanel for her relentless drive and never die spirit in spite the odds. At a time when women were not even taken seriously she was able to create an empire. Not only was she creative but an outstanding business woman too. She is among the key designers who made a lasting impression on fashion and her LBD and perfume Chanel No. 5 that was introduced in 1922 is still one of the most sought after even after all these years.
What is your favourite trend this year?
I am not much of a trend sucker but if I have to choose then I am crazy about the Athleisure trend that became huge last year. The reason why it is in vogue right now is because of its versatility, comfort and you instantly look like the ‘cool girl’ without much effort. It’s a trend many celebrities like Rihanna, Rita Ora, Gigi Hadid, the Kadarshians and more are sporting. It’s not only functional but stylish at the same time. All you need to know is how to dress it up or dress it down depending on where you’re heading to.
…And what would you like to see disappear?
Well, there are countless things that I never want to lay my eyes on and trust me you don’t want me to get started on that one.
Describe your ‘I made it moment’…
If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough. I still have a long way to go.
3 must have’s in a woman’s wardrobe
A legit and genuine leather jacket, LBD & LWD and pairs of branded leather boots/sneakers/heels.
What hot this winter?
This winter has been all about looking effortlessly cool without looking like I am trying too hard. One can simply achieve that by layering and sporting the super oversized overcoats and knits with almost everything and for almost every occasion in different colours, proportions and textures. These bad boys not only keep you extremely warm but also make you look and feel chic and put together.
Another star of winter is the faux fur in different forms which are undoubtedly a statement piece and create a sophisticated look.
Lastly, chunky boots which are truly made for walking and are heavy-duty and comfortable are not only popular on the streets but were also favoured by designers as they were seen on the Louis Vuitton, Alexander Wang and Prada runway.
Fashion tip for the woman of today
Well, the women of today are extremely smart and beautiful and I don’t need to say much. Just stay true to yourself, keep it real and be confident and love yourself. Discover who you are and what your fashion aesthetic is rather than following trends. Lastly, strive towards both inner and outer beauty.
Do you believe in age appropriate dressing?
For me age is just a number and you should never let it determine what you want to do or be. Don’t be scared to be who you are and dress how you enjoy dressing regardless of what others say. Life is too short to worry about what people say. You should rather enjoy every second of it by being who you are and doing what you like to do.
How important is accessorising your outfit?
I like to keep my accessories minimal and chic. These are such vital elements which can either make or break a look so you have to be very careful.
How much importance do you give to comfort while designing?
Comfort is one of the key components of my designs. I don’t want my clients to only look like a diva, I want them to feel like one and that’s impossible if one is not feeling comfortable and at ease.
Can style be acquired?
Style is something each of us already has; all we need to do is find it.
My signature style would be effortlessly cool with a slight edge.
One fashion indulgence…
No outfit will look good on anyone if you are not healthy and fit. Hence, I workout for a healthy mind and body and for healthy skin I have been following this amazing skin care routine by SK-II which works like magic but costs a bomb. Nevertheless, all their products are really amazing and they give me plenty of bangs for my buck!
