SHIWANI NEUPANE
Zodiac: Leo
Profession: Managing Director & Co-Founder, Lenden

Shiwani wears many hats. She is the author of two English novels: Monica: Pieces of Perfect (2012) and Crossing Shadows (2015). She has worked as a journalist and political analyst for major news companies such as BBC, CNN, and Al Jazeera. She has also made her space in the business world as the Director of Ambe Group, Nepal. Recently, she initiated her startup—Lenden. Shiwani is also the curator of the Global Shapers Kathmandu Hub. An extrovert, who is not afraid to take on challenges, Shiwani believes action speaks louder than words.

What do your family and friends like most about you?

My friends and family think I am loyal and honest. Unlike the many hats I wear at work, I don’t wear many faces and whatever is in my heart is usually on my face.

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

Love, respect and trust.

What would be your commitment to your better half?

To cherish the other person through every high and low and to grow together in character, spirituality and love.

If you could change any norms of marriage, what would you change?

I think the caste system is a useless construct and needs abolishment at the soonest. However, since it’s not going to happen anytime in my lifetime, inter-caste marriages are the best things to happen to weaken these horrid rigid structures!

Relationship goals:

1. Travel the world
2. Hike, trek and star gaze in Nepal.
3. Swim with sea lions
4. Grow together
5. Decorate a place together

Love or an arranged marriage…

It doesn’t matter. As long as it feels right, love or arranged is irrelevant.

Your ideal partner

I think someone I can trust, feel comfortable around, who has his career and goals. But most important is I need to feel happy around the person!

Venue

I could get married in a barn as long as the energy is right. I am not too picky about these things, but if I were to get married in Nepal, I bet a lot of it would come down to my parent’s preferences.

Music

I am a big fan of Nepali music! From Bipul Chettri to Sajjan Raj Vaidya, good soulful Nepali music would be a beautiful treat.

Wedding attire

I like things to have meaning, so probably something traditional in red, representative of my family, culture, and the nation.

Food

I love pan-Asian food so if it’s just up to me, Thai, Japanese, Chinese food.

Accessories…

I am a big fan of handcrafted traditional jewellery, and our part of the world is full of wonderful artisans who make such jewellery. So, that would be my choice.

SWOOPNA SUMAN
Profession: Singer & Songwriter
Age: 24
Zodiac sign: Sagittarius
Nickname: Swoops, Chinan
Height: 5’6”

Swoopna Suman needs little introduction; he has been winning hearts with his soulful songs. Here he talks about what it really takes for someone to win his heart. The versatile singer and song writer describes himself as an ordinary guy who believes in the power of dreams.

What do you consider to be your best quality?

I think I have a good sense of humor and although my friends and family don’t appreciate it much, I guess it’s my favourite quality. I am always positive, cheerful and care a lot about the people I love, I think my friends and family love this quality of mine.

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

To have a successful marriage, I think you have to be the best of friends more than being a husband or wife. To have someone 24/7 with you – who is a friend, lover and companion – with whom you can talk about anything and everything, someone who you can trust blindly and someone who feels the same way about you too. These things are very essential for a marriage to work for me!

How would you propose?

I want to write a wedding song and sing it for her. Honestly, I think just expressing your love and asking her to be with you is the most genuine and ideal way of proposing; you don’t need to do anything fancy. Just be genuine.

What would be your commitment to your better half?

Eternal love, never ending care and support

If could change any norms of marriage what would you change?

I don’t like the idea of changing surnames, so I’d want my better half to keep her surname and yes, the caste system is not cool at all, so that would go out of the window too. Also, the dowry system is a big NO.

Relationship goals

1. Sing a song together for our friends and family; even if she doesn’t sing.
2. Start a foundation about a cause that matters to both of us.
3. Go on a trek.
4. Travel from East to West in Nepal trying all the local cuisines.
5. A romantic gondola ride in Venice.

Love or an arranged marriage

I would definitely love to have a love marriage.

Ideal bride

Someone who accepts me the way I am, has an amazing sense of humour, respects her family, has a beautiful mind, is passionate about living her dreams and enjoying life while walking hand in hand with me.

Venue

I would love to get married in Okhaldhunga because that is where my parents got married. I would want the ceremony to happen somewhere out in the nature.

Music

I would want to have a bunch of musicians playing violins, viola and cello!

Wedding attire

Daura Suruwal

Honeymoon destination

I love beaches and islands!

What would you want to pick up your bride in?

I think picking her up on a bike would be fun!

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Smith College and a Masters degree in International Economics and Development from John Hopkins University. She joined the family business after gaining some work experience with the World Bank and Development Finance Corporation in Washington DC.

What do your family and friends like most about you?

A lot of my favourite people like me for my sassiness and humour. They also say that I am perceptive and have a lot of empathy.

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

For me, I need equality to be the cornerstone of my relationship. I need to be able to give and receive respect. So compatibility in behaviour and thoughts are essential. In general, I think people need to know who they are and be comfortable with themselves before they commit to someone else.

What would be your commitment to your better half?

Life will not be boring.

If you could change any norms of marriage what would you change?

The idea that a marriage decision is open to discussion by people other than the couple seems odd to me. I think once we change that normalised idea, it is really up to the couple to add or subtract whatever they want in a wedding ceremony, marriage or any sort of commitment. But again, for that, each person in the coupledom needs to have the same amount of power. There isn’t one thing I would like to change.

Love or an arranged marriage…

Any type of marriage is acceptable to me but I must get the most amount of flexibility with the least amount of intrusion.

Your ideal partner

Kind, ambitious, smart, playful, witty, funny, growth-oriented, empathetic and someone who believes in equality.

Honeymoon

Anywhere new is exciting. I have not been to Africa, South America, Central America and Australia. So they are all on my bucket list. I would ideally like to travel every year.

What do you consider to be your best quality?

I feel a person should always be genuine, humble, giving and kind because there is no essence of life without sharing love and positivity.

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

Well there’s no proven science to ensure a successful marriage but constant effort and understanding between partners is important.

What would be your commitment to your better half?

To respect her above loving her because where there is no respect there is no love.

If you could change any norms of marriage what would you change?

Marriage is a sacred union between two individuals. So anything that normalised inequality between two partners, I do not stand for it. I will always advocate for equal voice and rights in a marriage and that will be my norm.

Relationship goals

1. Travel around the world
2. Grow successful together
3. Start a new tradition together
4. Complete all the activities in the checklist we sit and make together
5. The most important, to lead a happy life

Love or an arranged marriage

I believe in taking life as it comes, so you never know if an arranged marriage brings out the best love.

Ideal bride

I haven’t really pondered over how my ideal bride should be but I definitely think she should be kind, respectful and understanding. I think those are some of the basic qualities everyone wants in their life-partner.

Venue

I don’t know about the venue but definitely a place with good food! Good food just makes everyone happy (at least me).

Wedding attire

I think I make any attire look good so don’t really think it will make a difference (laughs). Maybe I will let my mum and bride decide.

Food

Being a Nepali bhoj, pulau-masu should definitely be good.

Honeymoon

When you can look at the moon with your honey by your side why would you really need a specific destination?

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

Trust and space.

What would be your commitment to your better half?

I will always be there for you in the good and bad times.

If you could change any norms of marriage what would you change?

Instead of asking what their parents have, people should ask what a guy or girl has achieved. Instead of asking about religion and caste, they should ask about their goals. And dating for more than a year should be mandatory before marriage.

Relationship Goals

1. Travel every year.
2.  Work together in at least one project.

Love or arranged marriage

Love

Your ideal partner

Someone who is understanding, smart and kind.

Wedding venue

My sister loves organising events. So I am pretty sure she will be planning everything.

I listen to a lot of music that makes you dance, so probably something upbeat.

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

I think everything that brings happiness between a married couple is important. Doing the things that brings smiles to each other is all that matters.

If you could change any norms of marriage what would you change?

It would be the tradition of inviting hundreds of people that you don’t know or probably met once in your life. If it was up to me I could prefer it to be a small ceremony, just with people who are close to me.

Relationship goals

1. Make memories
2. Travel
3. Enjoy
4. Experience
5. Live

Love or an arranged marriage

Definitely love marriage although I have always been curious about the experience of an arranged marriage.

Ideal bride

An ideal bride should be someone who is ten times more beautiful than me and has five times more my net worth. Loving, caring, visionary, understanding are not important to me (laughs).

Venue

A nice place where above all, food must be excellent.

Wedding attire

Probably will be a dark blue suit, white shirt, brown shoes and black bowtie. Maybe it will change but will have to wait and see.

Honeymoon

Nothing really on my mind now but definitely somewhere warm. Also will depend a lot on my future wife and where she wants to go. But if I’ll have to say at gunpoint, it would be Australia.

What would you want to pick up your bride in?

It wouldn’t be a big vehicle for sure. Don’t want to get stuck for long in narrow streets of Kathmandu. My family car as my answer for now: Volkswagen Polo.

SHREEJANA RAWAT

Zodiac sign: Libra
Nickname: Bunu
Height: 5 feet 2 inches

My family has always praised me for my dedication and hard work. My mum admires that I always seek her permission before making any plans. My friends say that I am helpful and make fair judgments.

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

Love, understanding, trust, freedom and willingness to spend life together.

How do you wish to be proposed to?

I would love to propose or get proposed on a flight. There is no particular ideal way to propose. What’s important is that the person who is proposing should be someone you want to spend the rest of your life with.

What would be your commitment to your better half?

Dear Better Half, I promise to support you at your work and always respect your family and friends. I will always love you even when your hair and beard turns white and you have wrinkles. I vow to hold your hand and walk beside you in all dramas of life. No matter how big fight we have if you need me I will be there. I will take very good care of us and try my best to always make us happy. I promise if the situation ever demands, you will be my priority over everything else. I will never leave you alone in the journey of life. I promise to keep all my promises.

If you could change any norms of marriage what would you change?

I think I would change the caste system. If two people love each other then caste shouldn’t be a problem. Regarding the surname, one cannot change their identity but there is no problem adding the surname of your husband when you love everything that defines him.

Relationship goals

1.  If my partner is a pilot, I would love to fly the aircraft with him.
2.  Explore new places
3.  Watch movies or series together with good wine.

Love marriage with the consent and blessings of parents.

Your ideal partner

Since I am imperfect, I wish my partner to be someone imperfect with a positive attitude and good morals.

I would prefer a destination wedding. But as a woman needs to leave her home and go to her man’s house, I want to feel that emotion and so wish to get married at home.

Music

Rock and roll music so that everyone can dance. I would love to have Sajjan Raj Vaidya and Neetesh Jung Kunwar at my wedding.

Wedding attire

Simple yet elegant bright red sari.

Food

I would like to serve Thai or Arabic food or Thai Arabic fusion along with tasty and healthy Nepali food. There should be enough varieties for everyone to enjoy.

Honeymoon

Maldives

What do you consider to be your best quality?

Getting along with people and being nice to others can be considered as my best quality. I also take pride in being persistent and that’s what most of my friends and family like about me. My family and friends also love me for being very confident, caring, giving, understanding and considerate in various aspects.

What are the important things for a marriage to work?

Respect, understanding and love for each other are the important things for a marriage to work in my opinion. If there is great level of understanding and love in a relationship, it becomes unbreakable. Also, I believe in making marriage work in anyway and every way possible rather than finding the important things for marriage to work. It’s about the commitment you put into a marriage that makes it ever lasting.

How would you propose?

I think the ideal way would be taking your partner to a romantic destination of her choice, invite some friends and family members, and surprise her with an expensive ring.

What would be your commitment to your better half?

Never ending relationship, lots of love and care, quality time and stand beside her in any kind of circumstances.

If you could change any norms of marriage what would you change?

I like our traditional way of weddings. However, blessings should replace the gifts.

Relationship goals

1. Travel as many countries possible together.
2. Spend quality time, everywhere and anywhere possible.
3. Prioritise each other needs
4. Surprise gifts
5. Not forget important dates like birthday, wedding anniversary etc.

Love or arranged marriage?

Well it is said that marriage is destined so I will wait until I get married to answer this. But the key component of marriage is love so I believe there must be love in the relationship whether it’s arranged or love marriage.

Ideal bride

Someone who shares similar beliefs and possesses a positive mindset. Also, many men go for beauty when looking for a suitable bride. Sure, looks are important, but more important is that she should be trustworthy, smart, ambitious, caring and loving.

Venue

I would prefer a marriage ceremony at home among a closed group of family and friends from both sides in Nepal and abroad as I have many friends outside of the country.

Wedding attire

Even though I have spent most of my time abroad I still love our culture, and I would prefer the traditional attire.
