What’s YOUR Ayurvedic Body Type?

Ayurveda is based on the science that each individual has a specific dosha or elemental type. The three doshas are known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that many individuals are a combination of these three types and maintaining a lifestyle in accordance with your specific dosha can help maintain optimal health.

Vata type

These individuals tend to be very active, occasionally restless, and have tons of energy. Their build is often small, and they tend to have a fast metabolism. Vata individuals have thin, dry skin, and are very light sleepers. They are often considered flexible and can adapt to change quickly, however they are also quick to decide if they like something or dislike it. These individuals often feel stress and anxiety.

It is believed that these individuals should add warm, sweet, and moist foods to their diet and avoid cold, dry and bitter ones. Good options for this type include asparagus, avocado, zucchini, mango, bananas, soy, wheat, and warm milk and tea.

Pitta type

These individuals tend to be fiery and extremely extroverted. They often have a medium build, soft skin, and increase tendency towards perspiration. They dislike warm weather, and require moderate sleep, but do not awaken too easily. They can also become quickly irritated, or angry. They tend to be very passionate and ambitious as well.
For the Pitta type, cooling foods can be extremely balancing. These individuals should add cold and sweet foods and avoid sour and spicy foods. Good options include cucumbers, lettuce, celery, salads, apples, barley, oats, and cold drinks. These individuals should avoid coffee, tea, and alcohol if possible.

Kapha Type

These individuals tend to be more muscular with a solid build and wider frame. They have large eyes, with smooth skin and few wrinkles. Kapha individuals have a high endurance and are strong, but it is difficult to motivate them to be active and get moving. They need more sleep than others and tend to achieve very deep sleep. They also have an excellent memory and understand complex ideas. These individuals also have a slow digestive system.

This body type should add dry, light, and fresh foods to their diet and avoid heavy and sour foods. Adding in vegetables like cabbage, eggplant, and spinach can be helpful. Fruits like apples, pears, pomegranates and cranberries are also beneficial for this body type. Buckwheat and barley are ideal grains for this body type, while rice and wheat should be avoided.
