Frost & Sullivan held a webinar on Uncovering Nepal – Exploring Trends and Emerging Opportunities at Hotel Soaltee on 28 July. Speakers were Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, Arjun Kumar Karki, Abhimanyu Poddar, Padma Jyoti. The talk was facilitated by Manoj Menon.
Dabur Special Teej Festival 2016
The 15th Dabur Special Teej Festival was held at DECC, United World Trade Centre from August 11 – 15. The extravaganza was organised by Women Creation Centre in association with Dabur. The exhibition was the platform for women entrepreneurs to share their creations and experiences. There were more than 100 different types of stalls that offered clothes, accessories, food items, and handicrafts.
WEAN Cooperative celebrates the TEEJ festival by organising its annual Teej Mala where a number of women entrepreneurs participate. Handicrafts, clothing, food items, beads and bangles dominate the stalls. Rekha Aryal is the President of WEAN Cooperative and notes that local participation is increasing each year.
BFA Exhibition Project 2016
Kathmandu University School of Art and Centre for Art Design held an exhibition showcasing the art works, graphics and photography skills of the graduating batch of 2012 to 2016 at Nepal Art Council on July 22. Celebrating the silver jubilee of the University, the exhibition also promoted the capability of their graduates and their mentors. A total of 17 students of Studio Art and Graphic & Communication Design presented their works. They are the ninth batch to graduate.
Young Entrepreneurs Summit Women (2016)
The third Young Entrepreneurs Summit Women took place in kathmandu on July 29 organised by NYFE (Nepalese Young Entrepreneurs’ Forum) with the vision to empower positive business thinking and aim to create entrepreneurs through ideas, exchange, fellowship, education, trainings and advocacy among Nepali youth focusing more on women.
The keynote speaker of the Summit was Katrina Webb, Australian Sporting Legend, Founding Director of Silver to Gold – High Performance Solution and a professional speaker. Meanwhile other charismatic Nepali women entrepreneurs shared their entrepreneurial journey.
SAATHI felicitates Bandana Rana
NGO SAATHI organised a programme to felicitate their Founder, Advisor, Past President and current Strategic Director Bandana Rana on July 21. Rana was recently elected as the first ever UN-CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discriminations against Women) committee member from Nepal. She achieved the sixth position among 11 other selected members from over two dozen candidates from 189 countries at the UN Headquarters in New York in June.
Chief Guest at the program, Chairman of National Information Commission Krishna Hari Baskota, Founder President of Saathi, Madhuri Singh, President of Saathi, Uma Shah, and many other associates congratulated her on her achievement. The presence of numerous well known personalities marked the event. Rana will be engaged in CEDAW’s programme from 2017 to 2020.
Surya Fashion Show
Surya Collection, one of the largest Indian companies of ethnic wear, organised a fashion show on August 6 at Hotel Yak and Yeti. They have launched their collection of new ethnic wear among Nepali dealers and distributors. Sixteen Nepali models walked the ramp with Aastha Pokharel was the show stopper.
Princess Jayanti Achievement Award Ceremony
Annapurna Hotel organised its annual Princess Jayanti Achievement Award Ceremony at the hotel on August 4. The award is presented as a scholarship programme by the hotel to the top three female achievers of the graduate level in the field of Tourism and Hotel Management at the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM). Sabita Ojha, third year, Rojina Shakya , second year and Sabina Raut, first year students scoring the highest in the board exam of NATHM got the awards this year. Chief Guest of the ceremony Prabhakar SJB Rana, Chairman Emeritus of Soaltee Hotel and former president of HAN handed over the prize money and medal to the winners.
Wai Wai Glocal Teen Hero 2016
Young scientist Santosh Lamichane was declared as the second Glocal Teen Hero 2016 at the finale of the competition held in Kathmandu on August 1. The competition was organised by Glocal Khabar a concern of Glocal Pvt. Ltd in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth & Sports, Wai Wai, B.P. Koirala India Nepal Foundation of Embassy of India, and UNDP. Anil Keshary Shah, CEO of Mega Bank; Ambica Shrestha, President of Dwarika’s Hotel; Narottam Aryal, Executive Director of King’s College; Samriddhi Rai, Singer/Artist; and Saurabh Jyoti, Director of Jyoti Group were on the judging panel. ‘Wai Wai Glocal Teen Hero’ is a platform for those Nepali teenagers – aged 13-19 – who are involved, are initiators and achievers beyond their school/college curriculum. Among 281 applicants, six were selected as the finalists absed on innovation, achievement, impact as well as articulation and attitude. Valarie Julliand, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative handed the trophy to the winner.
Australian Boutique Wine in Nepal
Fresh Food Traders launched high quality Australian Boutique Wine for the first time in Nepal on August 8. Five different types of wines were introduced on the occasion. Willoughby Park, Byron and Herold, Peos Estate, Terra Felix and Plantagenet are the names of the wine. Actor Dr. Resh Marhatta is the brand ambassador for Nepal.
Suvekshya Rana organised a one day Teej special collection called RedTika at Pulchowk on August 12. On exhibit and sale were her collection of women’s wear and accessories besides other hand made products.
Farewell reception of First Secretary – Commerce and Director of Indian Cultural Centre, Ashish Sinha was held at Hotel Annapurna on July 27 in an evening of food, friends, music and dance. Ashish Sinha has since moved to New York in his current assignment.
NG Groups announces National Playwriting Competition
Organised by NG groups, National Playwriting Competition is currently taking place. Participants can send short plays of not more than 1000 words both in Nepali and English through email, mail or drop box. Among all the entries, top 10 will be selected for the master class and the top three finalists’ plays will be selected by the jury, which will later be published as a book. The winning play will be performed in theatres. Renowned theatre artist Anup Baral, poet and story writer Upendra Subba and author Anbika Giri will be on the judging panel.
